Sunshine And The Shadows is a novel inspired by the confrontation in the Rocky Mountain area between ranchers and environmentalists.Watching this conflict from a distance, a number of notions came to the author's mind, and with them themes that have been woven into the story. In a hodgepodge manner, some of them are as follows: First, for those of us with a farming and ranching, or some type of agricultural background, a quote by famed naturalist Aldo Leopold seems appropriate:

"There are two spiritual dangers in not owning a farm. One is the danger of supposing that breakfast comes from the grocery, and the other is the heat comes from the furnace."

For the author, who has lived on a farm and a ranch-plus-has worked in the oil field and in building construction, and has close friends who harvest timber, Leopold's quote resonates deeply. All of those industries and resources contribute so much to the materially abundant lifestyle we enjoy. No doubt, harm or change to the environment comes from those same industries and resource utilization.
